Floral Design – What Do You Need to Know

Floral design for beginnersFloral design and flower arranging might sound like a no-brainer, but there really is an art to it. There is even a science to it.  You have to know which flowers can’t be placed together and which chemicals you can use in the water you put them in, to make them last longer. If you are just a beginner in the floral design game, there are a few basics you need to get down before moving on the advanced stuff. Do you really want to become a Floral Designer?

Since you use fresh flowers for bouquets and flower arrangements, you have to know how to cut the stems and how to place the flowers in water in order for them to last longer.  If you are using floral foam to create you bouquet, make sure you soak the whole foam form in water so that there are no dry spots.  Too many dry spots will make your flowers wilt faster.  When you place the foam in a flower pot or holder, make sure that there is a rim of foam that sticks out above the holder.  This will help the arrangement look more natural as the flowers can then be arranged at an angle as well as straight up.

Japanese Floral Design – Ikebana’s Popularity in the Western World

Japanese Floral Design - Ikebana's Popularity in the Western World Japanese Floral Design, which is also known as Ikebana floral design, is a wonderful form of creating pleasing and spiritual arrangements in your garden, home or at an event. It has become increasingly popular over the years outside of its land of origin, Japan. In Western cutlers it is often used more as a pleasing form of decoration, and valued for its minimalistic and simplistic nature of the design rather then its original spiritual purpose.

over the world, particularly in the West, which has a very increasing interest in Japanese culture and decorations. This beautiful form of art involves the arrangement of flowers, but not just the blossoms themselves, but the whole structure including the Ikebana vases that are used. The design structure that is manipulated and the placing of the flowers are meant to represents the elements, heaven and earth, as well as the spiritual representation of balance. The overall form of the arrangement has to be composed and create harmony, not just in itself, but in the area it is shown in as well. The different vases used also have meaning and must add to the design as a whole. Even the way that the flowers are cut is of great importance.

Here is. in part, how Ikebana International answers the question “What is Ikebana

“IKEBANA is the Japanese art of flower arrangement. It is more than simply putting flowers in a container. It is a disciplined art form in which the arrangement is a living thing where nature and humanity are brought together. It is steeped in the philosophy of developing a closeness with nature.

As is true of all other arts, IKEBANA is creative expression within certain rules of construction. Its materials are living branches, leaves, grasses, and blossoms. Its heart is the beauty resulting from color combinations, natural shapes, graceful lines, and the meaning latent in the total form of the arrangement. IKEBANA is, therefore, much more than mere floral decoration…”

History Of Ikebana

Ikebana arrangements are meant to be one of the most beautiful ways to express this Japanese culture and its belief in harmony and sacred balance. Even though the Ikebana history is often not know in Western cultures, the arrangement of flowers is still very appealing form their visual aspects. The original of these arrangements use to be rather unpeeling, but through centuries of practice and development it has been shaped into a true art form. It is a very well respected and admired form of talent in Japan and its appeal has stretched all over the world. The most important aspect in the design is to make sure that the flowers point upwards. They are arranged in such a way to make them stretch towards the sky, as if reaching for the heavens. Though history this is meant to represent the spirituality and internal faith of the person that is creating it.

Ikebana – Popular Appeal

institutions and schools. At these places it is now possible to learn exactly the art of using the Ikebana shears and what each Japanese flower in an arrangement will represent. Though often the deep spiritual meaning is only hinted at, or briefly discusses, and it is often the case that the mail spiritual aspect is lost. The use of Ikebana has increased and it is now used as décor and decorations in very simple forms and as elaborate displays. It can be found from small arrangements in homes, elegant decorations in gardens and large décor it functions and conferences. The ancient origins and meaning is very important to remember and it is a shame that often the design appeal is more significant than the meaning behind the different flowers, vases and forms used.
